Lad's love is semi-evergreen in frost-free winter climates, but will die back in cold winter conditions. A sub-shrub reaching a height of 70cm to 100cm. Although once grown as both a culinary and medicinal herb, it is now mainly grown in gardens for its attractive ornamental foliage, complemented by its pleasant citrus to camphor-like foliage scent.

It is a well-known medicinal plant in Central Asia, Asia Minor, and south-eastern and central Europe, where it is used in homeopathy. Dried sprigs are also traditionally placed in wardrobes or dress drawers to repel moths. It has a long list of regional common names.

Tiny yellow tubular flowers appear from mid-summer to late September in small, pendulous panicles.

It grows best in warm, sunny, humus-rich sites with well-drained, not too wet soils. It is heat and drought tolerant, but will remain smaller in harsher conditions. Suitable for poor soils.
