Artemisia ludoviciana 'Silver Queen' is known by various common names, including silver wormwood, prairie sage or white sagebrush, because of the appearance of its leaves. It does not belong to the salvia or sage family, but to the daisy family, Asteraceae.

Silver Queen is a cultivar that grows up to 60cm tall on greenish-white stems covered with aromatic, sage-like, serrated leaves. The leaf shape and silver colour adds texture and contrast to the garden and is aromatic when crushed. Tiny, rather inconspicuous, yellowish flower heads appear in dense panicles in summer. The flowers have little ornamental value compared to the foliage.

It forms dense colonies due to its rhizomatous roots. The invasive habit makes it unsuitable for use in borders or herb gardens, but it is a good choice for areas with poor, dry soils for isolated areas where it can naturalise without risk to other plants. Remove the flowers before they set and cut the whole plant back to the ground in autumn. Susceptible to root rot in damp soil, especially poorly drained soil.

Native Americans used to make smudge sticks from this plant, which they believed would warn of evil influences and sickness when ignited. White Sagebrush is believed to have powerful antimicrobial and antifungal properties and is often used in medicinal teas and poultices. There are many different types of plant used for smudging, but Salvia apiana is the best known.
