Centranthus ruber var. coccineus is a more compact variety of this species with deeper red flowers. The images above are of the species which has a slightly more open habit and pinker flowers. If we grow our plants from seed the resultant plants may be variable.

Red valerian is easy to grow in a dry sunny location. Low maintenance with bushy stems that produce an abundance of star-shaped flowers with an impressively long bloom time. It is a hardy perennial that adds a wonderful splash of vivid color to any garden as well as being an excellent plant for bees and other wildlife.

An old-fashioned wildflower, it is a great choice for cottage style gardens as it will grow and seed itself into the cracks of stone walls and pavers. The cut flowers also look great in a bouquet. The young fresh but bitter leaves and the roots have culinary uses in soups and salads.

It is sometimes confused in herbal and folk tradition with the true valerian (Valeriana officinalis). Whilst true valerian has a very strong action on the nervous system, this species has no known medical properties.
