Giesta-branca or Spanish/Portuguese Broom. An upright deciduous shrub that bears a profusion of white flowers in late spring to early summer. Growing between 1 and 2.5 metres on poor dry soils it is a frost hardy, drought tolerant tough large shrub. Information on the internet is dominated by planta-phobes warnings of it being invasive - not so here, this is where it lives, and it's a successful and easily controllable plant, contributing significantly to wildlife habitat and repairing mankind's ecological damage. Good habitat for birds, insects and chameleons.

More details

A valuable plant in land reclamation, a legume and primary coloniser, it provides early shelter for other less vigorous plants to establish. Although it is fast-growing and therefore often a sprawling shrub, it responds well to being trimmed or even cut back to 20 - 30 cm above ground. Recent changes in Algarvian roadside maintenance show how quickly it produces a dense shrub of new, bright green growth after being flailed to ground level.
