Uruguayan Firecracker. A clump-forming perennial with low spreading, soft grey velvety stems and leaves. The bright coral tubular flowers with protruding stamens bloom in compact terminal clusters above the foliage from early summer until well into autumn, when the plant becomes somewhat dormant for the winter, although it remains evergreen in our climate. It can be cut back to the ground, just above any new shoots coming from the base, if it spreads too far.

It grows best in full sun in well-drained soil and is drought tolerant once established. This is a great small ornamental plant with attractive foliage even before the coral flowers dance above, making for an even more beautiful show and attracting butterflies and bees to the garden.

It has many synonyms - Dicliptera squarrosa or Dicliptera sericea and earlier names include Jacobinia suberecta and Justicia suberecta.
