The pride of Madeira. A large herbaceous perennial sub-shrub that grows to 2 metres tall and wide, usually with a candelabra-like growth habit, it is very fast-growing and needs plenty of space to develop. It is best used as a specimen plant, as other plants are unlikely to grow well under it.

It produces very showy, deep blue spikes of flowers in early summer in a dense, slender, elongated inflorescence up to 45 centimetres long. The flower head is much sought after by bees and butterflies for its nectar. Cut these back after flowering to encourage bushier growth. The leaves have slightly irritating hairs, so it is best to wear gloves.

It is reputed to be short-lived, but is still a worthwhile addition to any water-wise garden or coastal planting. We believe it will live longer if left alone and not given too much care (fertiliser) or water, particularly out of season.

  • Only when all the details of your order are agreed, will we send you an agreed Factura/Invoice and request payment from you.

  • Once an order is agreed we require a 50% payment to secure the plants. Plants in the shopping basket are not reserved until an order is placed.

  • Availability - the store contains 3 availability categories

  • Plants ready for despatch, collection within 14 days

  • Plants we have but they are still growing into their containers. These are offered for reservation and will be released once they are ready. An estimated date for their availability is given.

  • Plants that we only hold a limited stock of, or only propagate occasionally or on demand. This also includes plants we are going to propagate in the near future.
