Native to the Mediterranean basin, this shrubby heather grows naturally as a low shrub of up to 1m in exposed places, but can reach 2.5m in sheltered gardens. It grows on rocky slopes, in crevices in the rock and in pockets with little soil, varying its size according to its resources. Unlike most other plants in the family, Erica multiflora thrives in alkaline rather than acidic soils.
This heather provides nectar and pollen for bees and the many other species of pollinating insects, as well as habitat for other native fauna. It flowers profusely in open woodlands and on rocky slopes during the winter months, the flowers are abundant, pale pink, narrow and bell-shaped, up to 7mm long, and appear late in the autumn and throughout the winter. Suitable for exposed coastal sites.
