Ferula communis subsp. catalaunica is a striking, hardy and large tap-rooted herbaceous perennial, native to the Iberian Peninsula. It is a giant fennel, reaching anything between 2–4 metres at maturity, although being deciduous it dies back below ground level each summer. It is also worth mentioning that each growing season you get the benefit of several different plant forms as it develops delicate shrubby umbrella-like leaves, 50-60 cm above the ground, followed by a flower head that bolts through the foliage into a spectacular columnar upright inflorescence, 2–4 metres above the original plant.

The leaves are divided into many slender segments and are an example of natures incredible structural engineering ability. The eventual flowering structure is equally impressive, its many branched stems bearing multiple rounded umbels of small yellow flowers. They are produced in early summer and can be seen in many local woodlands that are no longer cultivated. Often it occurs grouped in large numbers in our valleys and hillsides, giving a spectacular display in early summer. Why not have one in your garden? - no water needed, and you can save a few dried flower heads for an Algarvian Christmas tree next December.

Maturity can take several years to form the giant flower heads, but it is worth waiting for. We've no doubt that by relieving any soil compaction, adding some organic matter to the planting site and some winter watering, the process can be speeded up considerably.
