An evergreen, compact clumping grass grown for its striking blue foliage. It can reach a height and spread of 20-25cm and is drought tolerant once established, although a good garden soil is probably best as it will retain some moisture. Fescues do not like to be watered from above (wetting their foliage) as this can lead to rot in the centre of the plant.

To keep the foliage looking its best, you can comb or cut off dead foliage, but only around the edges of the plant. Alternatively, some people prefer to leave this dry 'skirt' alone, but removing it in a wet winter will prolong the life of the plants.

More information

Like most Fescues, these are compact plants that retain their circular pin cushion shape and don't propagate. They can be planted as solitary specimens or in groups of 3, 5 or 7. It can be used as a companion plant, filling in between succulents or more compact plants such as Centauria or Thyme, especially when clipped or shaped. More often it is seen planted in masses as a ground cover, in which case it is important to get the spacing right. Probably 20-40 cm is best and randomly, vary the spacing and group the plants within the patch, otherwise you get an unnatural polka dot, soldiers on parade effect. And like other fescues, it grows well in containers.
