The Chinese Fan or Fountain Palm. An elegant slender stemmed palm, cold hardy (-15C) and tolerant of poor soils, but does best when regularly fertilized in late spring. It produces huge emerald green fan leaves up to 2 metres across. They are often grown for their immature form, as the foliage creates a wide spreading ball-shaped canopy that conceals the trunk. In later years, as the trunk extends, the canopy remains in a circular ball-like form. The long leaf segment tips hang gracefully giving the canopy a weeping appearance and this gives the palm its other common name, the fountain palm. They are moderate to slow growing, much depending on conditions, eventually reaching a height of 5–8 metres, so not being a large palm it lends itself to the smaller garden. They form a closely ringed, smooth trunk that eventually greys with time.

More details

The leaf stalks are spiny while the palm is young, but once mature the palm is spineless. The old leaves will persist for a year or so on mature palms, but eventually they are self-cleaning and do not require annual leaf removal to prevent a skirt. They are extremely tolerant of drought but like all palms, the more water they have and the better the growing conditions, the faster they will grow. There are many USA dominated internet references to them being invasive, but this is in tropical climates, not mediterranean.
