A member of the daisy family, the dagger flower is a perennial or biennial knapweed, native to Mediterranean areas. Although its common name sounds intimidating, and it looks similar to a thistle, it is not prickly and its fluffy top is quite delicate.
The pretty pineapple-like calyx flowers are held on tall, wiry stems that divide and branch with numerous small bluish-pink star-shaped flowers. They are present from spring through to autumn in favourable conditions. It will survive in very poor infertile soil, often on disturbed land, where it is a successful primary coloniser. However, it will perform better in a more shaded area with richer soil, for example under mature trees where there is a good ecology of leaf litter and shelter. It is very attractive to bees and butterflies and looks great in a prairie style garden amongst tall grasses.
After flowering, it may die back, or shrink down, leaving just the large basal leaves, until spring.
