Hairy melic or silky spike melic. This is a deciduous perennial grass, rhizomatous and clump forming with erect culms (stems above ground) between 50 to100 cm long. Native to Europe and North Africa, it is renowned for its soft, fluffy flowers that are distinct in garden grasslands and herbaceous borders. The numerous 20 cm long creamy white flowers appear 60-80 cm above ground in early summer and remain for 2 to 3 months. They create excellent contrast in mixed borders, the slightest wind providing a wave-like movement of the soft flowers among other plants.

Melica ciliata prefers full sun and a well drained soil, but will grow in most conditions, including some shade. Fresh soft green foliage appears in winter followed by the white flower spikes, the whole planting fading to a typical golden brown colour in late summer.
