A longstanding garden favourite, Glaucous Evening Primrose is a popular choice for sunny borders.

From late spring to late summer, Oenothera tetragona bears 6 cm, saucer-shaped flowers in golden yellow, which contrast beautifully with its red tinged buds and stems. The erect flower stems are held above glossy green, narrow leaves. This evening primrose loves freely draining soil, where it will happily seed about if you let it. Grow it with other Mediterranean dry-loving species. It associates especially well with contrasting blue-flowered plants such as Lavenders. Evening primroses are low - maintenance plants which blend effortlessly into naturalistic schemes and cope well with dry, hot sites such as wall side borders or coastal gardens.

Oenothera fruticosa subsp. tetragona is best in full sun to part sun. Use this plant in hot dry places such as wild gardens, rock gardens, erosion control on banks, meadows, native plant areas, or cottage gardens. Anything too shady will lead to leggy plants.
