Phlomis purpurea is a very commonly seen wild plant growing in the countryside of most parts of southern Portugal, especially noticeable when it is flowering in spring. Native to North Africa and Southern Iberian Peninsula. Growing up to 200cm tall and 100cm wide, topped with whorls of rosy-lavender hooded blossoms in late spring-summer. The dry seed heads are also attractive after flowering. The shoots and underside of leaves are woolly whitish and were traditionally used to clean kitchen pots and pans. It is often mistaken as being Sage, but Phlomis does not have fragrant leaves or culinary use.
Plant in full sun to light shade. Heat and drought tolerant and able to grow on very poor stony soils. Cut back very hard every few years after flowering to promote fresh bushy growth.
