Persian turpentine tree. A deciduous slow growing, very long-lived ornamental tree normally up to 7 metres in height (capable of reaching 10 -15 m in ideal conditions) with a dense shading crown in summer and striking orange Autumn colour. It may be used as a root stock for Pistacia vera, the commercially produced nut. The tree has a very long history of use in traditional medicine. By all means this is a tree for the future here in Southern Portugal, tough and extremely tolerant of both extreme cold and heat it will adapt to the harshest of conditions. The gum from the tree's bark has many properties used in traditional medicine, as well as being used to extract Turpentine. One of the oldest trees recorded is in the ancient Iranian city of Oudraj and is said to be over 1500 years old. Although the flowers and fruit are not very visible, this is still a very pretty tree in any garden.
There is a comprehensive article on Pistacia atlantica here on Wikipedia, all you really need to know about this fascinating tree.
