Plectranthus venteri
A relatively new species to horticulture, Plectranthus venteri was re-instated in 2019 into the Coleus genus. The correct name is Coleus venteri, but it is still widely known by both names.
An aromatic, sun-loving, water-wise shrub that is fast-growing once established and long-lived. Suitable for gardens or container plantings, with fleshy lobed leaves that are distinctly aromatic. Although the flowers are quite small, the leaf form and compact nature of the plant makes it a good subject for a rockery. It is also one of the few spurflowers that can be grown in full sun, and it tolerates mild frost. Endemic to a small area of South Africa, it is very drought tolerant and will grow without problems in poor, stony soils. It is known as a good insect deterrent. However, many beneficial insects, such as bees and butterflies, are attracted to the flowers. The glandular hairs secrete etheric oils that release a strong aroma when touched.
