Dwarf Pomegranate is an excellent compact hedging species. It flowers profusely and produces ornamental fruits almost all year. It will grow to 100 cm tall but lends itself well to both an informal or formal hedge where it can be trimmed down as low as 30 cm.

It is commonly used for this type of demarcation hedging in mediterranean formal historic gardens, particularly Islamic gardens, however it has its place in any dry garden, especially if you can use it to replace walls - or even if just you want large areas of greenery. This is a very neat and tidy, easily controllable, although slightly spiky hedge plant with very low water requirements once established. Why not use it as a lawn alternative, a raised lawn?

Punica granatum 'Nana' is deciduous and has attractive autumn and winter colouring. The fruit, if left on the plants in winter, break open and provide food for insects and birds.
