Retama monosperma, the bridal broom or bridal veil broom, is a large much-branched flowering shrub with slender stems, growing up to 3 metres tall. The leaves are very small, short-lived and the plant often remains leafless for most of the year, photosynthesis being carried out by the green stems. It is native to the Mediterranean region, chiefly Spain and North Africa. Its native habitat is coastal scrub, but it often inhabits wasteland and roadsides.

Further details

When grown as an ornamental, it does best as a plant to build a structure in a garden. It has slender branches that droop in a weeping willow fashion with flowers that are small, white, pea-like, appearing in short clusters from the stems, and are sweetly fragrant. It requires a sunny position and grows best in drier soils of low fertility. A fast-growing species with an average lifespan of around 15 years, tolerant of harsh conditions and strong, salt-laden winds. It can be used in soil stabilization projects, particularly on exposed coastal sites, where it can offer front-line protection to other less tolerant species.

Retama monosperma forms root nodules with Ensifer fredii (a nitrogen fixing bacteria), this creates a symbiotic relationship with certain soil bacteria; these bacteria form nodules on the roots and fix atmospheric nitrogen. Some of this nitrogen is utilized by the growing plant, but some can also be used by other plants growing nearby.

An important source of nectar for bees and other insects in winter, as well as good habitat for birds and chameleons in summer.
