Stachys cretica
Woundwort. A spreading form growing to 30cm tall and 40cm wide with soft grey foliage and whorls of pink flowers in Spring. It will grow on poor, stony or sandy, perfectly drained soils, including limestone. Its allelopathic properties make it a good ground cover plant in gravel gardens. It is one of many plants collected in Greece to make mountain tea and it is thought to have sedative and antispasmodic properties. Rich in nectar, the flowers are attractive to butterflies and it is a valuable plant to bee keepers providing pollen and nectar. A more unusual activity is performed by certain bees, of scraping hairs off the leaves to form brood cells.
