Plant Details

A typical bunch grass native to the steppes of Europe and Asia. The stems of this perennial are straight, sectionally round and almost erect. This grass blooms in late spring with its most striking feature, 20 cm long loops of hairy silvery white flower panicles. In central Iberia it thrives in shallow, dry soils, on stony ground and mountain fields or dry sloping hill sides. Typically grows in clumps of between 60 - 90 cm. It can be used as a specimen or planted in small groups. The light feathery flower panicles sit well amongst many late spring flowering perennials, bringing movement and contrast to plant combinations, the informal light structure when in flower lends itself to the prairie grassland appearance many gardeners are trying to achieve.

Traditional uses include soft brush making for sweeping floors and whitewashing walls.
