Stipa tenacissima
Forming clumps up to 75 cm high, this bunch grass grows in poor base soils and dry areas. Wind resistant, salt tolerant and frost-tolerant to perhaps -10C in short doses. Leaves are slender, olive green, curling back on themselves to form a tight, attractive clump if trimmed occasionally. Flowers appear in spring and early summer on 75 -150 cm spikes in a fan-like arrangement, creating an attractive golden brown punctuation above low shrubs and ground cover. This is a good plant for holding soil together and preventing erosion, particularly in poor, inhospitable soils. It does not grow in shade.
Not to be confused with Stipa tenuissima - a completely different, non-native plant
Stipa tenacissima is a species endemic to western-central Mediterranean countries, including the Iberian Peninsula and much of North Africa. It grows on dry, rocky soils with a rich base, forming a steppe-like meadow. Also known as esparto, esparto grass, halfah grass, alpha, or needle grass, it has been managed by people for centuries to produce a fibre product called esparto which is used for crafts such as ropes, basketry, and espadrilles, as well as for making paper.
