Strelitzia nicolai is the giant, white flowering bird of paradise plant, forming clumps up to 5m tall. It needs plenty of space to grow. It is hardy but looks best planted in areas protected from strong wind as this can damage the foliage.

Being tropical they need water at times we don't have it in mediterranean regions so 3 or 4 deep waterings in summer are necessary. For this reason a deep soil is important for a good root system, water well in Autumn and Spring if there is no rain. They will tolerant drought and will use a lot less water than people think once established. Maintaining a 2 metre diameter thick mulch will help.
