A large bunch grass native to Portugal and other Southern Mediterranean countries. Also known as the giant feather grass, giant needle grass and golden oats, this is a tough drought resistant plant that thrives in heat and poor soils. It creates a bunch grass foliage mass between 60-90 cm wide of grey-green foliage with attractive, tall and prominent flower spikes emerging silver-lavender in the late spring, ageing to a radiant golden over the summer, and persisting in tan into winter. The spikes typically grow to 2.4 m tall, rising high above the foliage.

More information

Stipa can be used as a specimen plant, surrounded by a low ground cover or, as is often the case, planted drifting between other perennials in larger gardens. It is suitable for containers, although this limits the size of the plant. The clumps should be pruned back in December before any new growth is resumed. This Stipa does not like wet winters, so a well-drained soil is best or it can be planted in raised areas where there is no risk of puddling. Like most native grasses, they provide important habitat for reptiles, insects and birds (so be careful mowing in winter - if you have several plants, don't do them all at once!)
