Canary Island bellflower. A drought tolerant summer deciduous perennial rambler. It grows best when planted in the open shade of other bushes or trees, they can also offer it a structure and support through which it can climb. The beautiful 5-6 cm long orangey-red bell shaped flowers appear in late mid-winter and continue to bloom through to spring. These are spectacular on top of a supporting bush, particularly a non-flowering one. It will grow up to 3 metre long stems, these push through the branches of other planting and allow the orange flowers to hang as though they were those of its host. It grows equally well off the top of a shady retaining wall. Bees and other pollinating insects feed on the abundant nectar produced by the flowers.

More information

Canarina dies back to below ground level in summer, re-sprouting from its tuberous root in autumn. Extreme heat is the enemy of this plant, hence its survival strategy of disappearing below the ground in a shady spot once it gets too hot. Once it has died back the dead foliage disappears quite quickly and is soon covered by the new Spring growth of the shrub. The foliage is surprisingly light and delicate, the stems being hollow, so it soon disintegrates leaving little evidence of it ever being there. A nice seasonal addition to the garden.

Although it will survive with some help if planted in early Spring, watering is essential if there is a winter drought. We would recommend planting in Autumn so it can get its roots down to survive summer. It should not be in an area with summer irrigation as the tubers may rot off.
