Known as Carpet of Stars, Ruschia lineolata is a dense, low-growing succulent which forms a matted almost rigid cushion of up to 60 cm in diameter. It is versatile and tough, growing in any well drained soil type and in full sun or partial shade. It has prolific pink flowers in early spring and autumn, ever popular with the insects. Good as ground cover and great as a lawn substitute because it will take some occasional foot traffic. Mass plant in terraces, rock gardens and mixed beds. On slopes, they can also be planted to help stabilize soil.

Their round cushion-shape make them ideal container plants, where they will spread to spill out and hang down over the sides of the pot.

Cold, heat and very drought tolerant once established it has an interesting growth habit of climbing over the edge of rocks, path edgings and walls. It has slow but constant growth and can be easily contained by trimming it to shape.

Plant in full sun and be careful not to overwater.

Important details for lawn alternative uses

If used as a lawn substitute, the soil should be prepared well in advance to allow the germination, regrowth and subsequent removal of any weeds. Soil should be free draining, so the incorporation of some organic matter and sand or gravel will help with heavy soils.

It is recommended to plant on a 25 cm grid so that the plants cover the ground quickly in the first year (the consequence of rapid coverage is that the Ruschia will prevent other weeds invading the bare ground). At 25 cm apart, planted in staggered rows (a triangular grid) you will need 18 plants per square metre.

IMPORTANT - Please note this is the species Ruschia lineolata and not the variety Ruschia lineolata 'Nana' (Dwarf Carpet of Stars) that is advertised and marketed on the internet in the United States. R. lineolata 'Nana', Dwarf Carpet of Stars reputedly has a lower growing habit than the species, we have no experience of the 'Nana' variety and do not offer it for sale.
